The ITTF World Cup is the top international table tennis event, and it is also called the "three major events in the world" with the Olympic Games and the World Table Tennis Championships. As an innovation of the World Cup competition system, Chengdu Mixed Team World Cup combines men’s and women’s team events, and male and female players are combined in the same team. As a brand-new event focused by the ITTF, the Mixed Team World Cup combines men’s and women’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles, and Chengdu will hold the event for five consecutive years.
Chengdu Mixed Team World Cup attracted 18 teams from all over the world. The tournament adopts the best-of-15-game system (including three-game system for each single game), and the team that wins eight games first wins the game. The relationship between victory and defeat in each game will not only rewrite the overall score, but also affect the mental state of the athletes in the next game.
"In the past week, the Chengdu Mixed Team World Cup proved to us that it was a great success and opened a’ new era’ for table tennis." Petra Sorin, president of the ITTF, said that the ITTF and the ITTF Foundation set gender equality and diversity as the development theme, and hoped that the competition system of the mixed team World Cup could bring real changes to gender equality and better improve the sports situation of female athletes.
